Have you ever felt that a phone near you would ring, and then, it suddenly did? Do you often give the correct replies to questions that hadn’t even been asked yet? Can you see events happening before they actually do? If you answered “yes” to all of the questions given, then you there’s no need for you to ask what is ESP, because you already have it.
Extrasensory Perception or ESP involves being able to receive information beyond the use of the five natural senses: seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching. A person is said to have ESP when he/she is able to sense things that cannot be sensed by others using the natural senses.
There are many types of ESP, but the most popularly ones are:
• Telepathy – the ability to read the thoughts or mind of someone else
• Precognition – the ability to see into the future
• Retrocognition – the ability to see into the past
• Psychometry – the ability to learn about someone or something simply by touching an object
• Clairvoyance – the ability to see things or events as they are happening somewhere else
• Channeling – the ability to act as a medium or conduit of spirits of the dead, for communicating with the living
Logic vis-à-vis Intuition
Like any other controversial subject – in the sense that it is hard to prove or disprove with finality, one way or the other – ESP has both very robust defenders and naysayers. Those who don’t believe in ESP abilities say that anything that is out of the realm of logic is just myth or wishful thinking. Those who are believers, however, claim that ESP is a reality, and it is immaterial whether people believe in or not. It is just supposedly there, take it or leave it.
Experience vs. Scientific Facts
On the other hand, there are also those who can’t make up their minds. Their logic tells them that things existing beyond the physical are not real, because they have no basis in scientific fact. At the same time, these people have already experienced a small event or two that does not make sense to them from a logical perspective. For example, without even being consciously aware of it, they are immediately able to form “impressions” about someone else.
Even without any kind of previous or current physical contact, they can either have a strong feeling of attachment or revulsion towards someone they have just encountered for the first time. The first time that something like that happened, they’re likely to just be puzzled and brush it off. However, when it happens more than once, and when their reactions towards the person they encountered turned out to be true (as in someone who was repulsive to them turned out to be a serial killer), then they start having second thoughts about the reality of ESP.
Scientists all over the world continue to find answers to the question of what is ESP and whether everyone has unusual abilities that only need to be tapped, or if there are only a fortunate few who are gifted with it. There are no concrete answers, but that does not discount the fact that many people believe with all their heart that ESP is real.
